I am running AutoCAD 2002 and am creating a custom font. There are characters that I have that I would like to define new %%x for. For example, I want to be able to have the user type in %%R and get a special character. I've already got the character defined in the SHP file, I just don't know how to create a new %%x, or if this is even possible. Does anyone know anything about this?? Thanks for any assistance.

I believe you can ceate your own %%nnn special characters in a custom font. AutoCAD's online help talks about 'unicode' characters; I haven't tried or researched but from a quick look it appears possible and you can get some rudimentary help on line.

Yes you can create your own custom font. It is easiest to start with an existing font and create your own additions to it. You will need to edit the SHP files (they are ASCII) and then compile them into SHX files for AutoCAD to use. AutoCAD gives you some to start with. Look under your AutoCAD\support folder I believe to find some SHP files. Read the Help in ACAD under the Customization Volume and go to town.

Ok - I already have the font created, I just need to know how to use the special characters that I have created. I am trying to use %%nnn where nnn is the ascii number. However, I'm not having much luck. Using this example....

*00096,17,unspecified
2,064,...etc...,0

I should be able to do an mtext command and type %%150 and get my special character, but all I get is "%%150" for my text. Does anyone know why this doesn't work??

Ok, well, I guess the %%nnn only works in text, and not mtext. Hmm....

Mtext uses windows true type equivalents to display and control the font. You are correct, mtext will not display your custom shape. Only text will apply your octal code (%%???).
