Custom buttons and categories

When looking at the category information for the enhanced PPES display, you change the filters by calling from javascript. I have managed to do this with a custom button, but you need to know an encoded piece of data that is the category code. I have not found a way of either stepping through the categories in Javascript or translating from text

Can anyone help
