Hi all,

Now this is going to sound nuts but I will run it by you anyway.

On my laptop the cursor keeps going off on one. It will randomly go to the top of the screen and then I can only move left to right. To restore any normality I have to start pressing the mouse buttons on the laptop and on my optical mouse.

My laptop is a Compaq n400c and has the 'stick' for a mouse in the middle of the keyboard but I use an optical PS2 mouse most of the time.

Is the 'stick' stuck in some way? Is my optical mouse at fault?

Ideas please!

i would try to uninstall and reinstall the drivers for both mouses. Is your optical mouse USB? Many a time I've experienced strange mouse behavior from USB mice. never had a problem with a reguler mouse.

If your mouse is wireless then you would need to replace the batteries, but you didnt mention that it is wireless.

Does device mgr have any marks in the mouse section?
Other than that, as already suggested, uninstall and re-install the mouse drivers. Better still, uninstall both and just re-install the "stick" first, see if that is working ok and then re-install the ps2 mouse and drivers.

certain dell laptops with the trackpoint (stick) were notorious for having this same problem. i would suspect the stick is to blame. see if theres any way to disable it via software or in the BIOS for testing. if its still in warranty, get the keyboard replaced.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replys.

My mouse is a PS2 Optical Mouse. Since the posting the problem has not occured again but I am certain it will happen again at some point.

I have looked into disabling the stick in the control panel but there is nothing there.

I will have a good look through the BIOS on my next start up.

Gavin.

You might try disabling or uninstalling the the stick in the device manager But you might also want to make sure you have the drivers for it in case you want it back at some point.
