Current Sessions unknown users

On my Exchange 2000 server under the Protocols / SMTP / Default SMTP Virtual Server / Current Sessions, I occasionally find an unknown IP (The IP is listed but it's unknown to me). Sometimes there will be two or three listed. They have been logged on for a various times, but sometime over many hours.

What do these entries represent? (unauthorized access? We don't have an open relay. ???)
