curious..have you extended and expansion module to another floor or building?? 1

a little off the wall question. I have an upcoming construction situation that presents a challenge. Well, not really a challenge, but a question. I have building with an IP Office control unit running 30 phones. They are building another building right next to it that needs another 30 phones. It would be less cost and work to just install an Digital Station mod 30 in the new setup and just pull a cat5 cable through the conduit instead of a 50 pair. Just curious if this is even possible. Never tried it. Anyone else?

You would need to use a 50 pair. The cables that come with the expansions are the only ones you should use. I have seen people try to replace them with a standard 3' patch cable and had problems.

Don't.

Back in the day with BCM50's and their expansion modules you couldn't do it either. They're very specifically matched for the loop length on the proprietary TDM interfaces that they're connecting.

Like Bud said, if it's new and you don't want IP, plan for a 50 pair.

Although the ports are RJ45 they aren't ethernet.

The cables supplied are shielded Cat5 which suggests they are susceptible to interference.

The signalling through the cable is more akin to ISDN PRI. It relies on a very accurate timing signal for all activity across the cable and unlike IP, it has very little fault tolerance. Its much more either on or off, works or it doesn't.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

I have already tried in the past with CAT6 shielded wiring, after 4 meters distance the expansion started being unstable, lost of connections, delays, and so on. That's why as per previous comments the connection is a PCM 2Mbit, not ethernet.

hey guys..thanks for all the info. I rather assumed that was going to be the case with the cable length. Even if it were possible, the more I think about it, the more I would not want them to be in different locations. Thanks again.
