Curious GIF problem?!?

This has happened to me before and the only thing that fixed it was to reformat my computer. I would not suggest you do that as the first resort, probably the last.
Perhaps you have the file association of .gif files as something else, but that would not stop you from reading or writing? Are you using Photoshop 5.5? If so, it could be a bug in the program.
I would try uninstalling completely, then reinstall it.
