I know with XP you get a 'driver installing' followed (hopefully) by a 'your device is installed and ready to use' message for every new device you plug into a USB port. But why do you get this for each USB port and also for each device, literally! I just bought two identical card readers and BOTH were detected as new hardware when plugged into the same USB port! Why?

Because they are 2 different things. They might be identical, on the outside, but Windows doesn't know that. You plug in one it detects it and installs it. You plug in a second one, but although it looks identical on the outside, Windows sees an entirely new device with a different serial number, and so installs it again even though it most likely uses the same set of drivers.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.
