Curious about DCs and Email

I recently configured a single Windows 2000 Server to act as a domain controller. To start I made up a bogus DNS name and followed through with the rest of the configuration... I then created my user accounts and administered rights to file shares etc. The main reason for creating a DC was for the use of AD and it's enhanced security features. I was testing logons and authentication and it seemed to work great (just what I was hoping for)... Then I tested email, well the companies email service is outsourced through an external provider. everytime I opened outlook express it kept prompting me for the username and password for the mail server, and it just prompted over and over again. Anyways if anyone can shed some light on this situation it would be helpful. Oh yeah the company has a registered domain name that used for their website, should I perhaps use that.

Have you added a DNS alias for your mail server and pointed Outlook Express to this.

Chris.

No I have not tryed that yet but will give it a shot and see what happens. In regards to the DNS name should I actually be using the registered one when installing AD?

You do not need to use a real domain name when setting up active directory. Are you using an email server as well such as exchange?

I am happy to say that I have fixed the problem and everything is running smoothly. As tom1101 said I didn't have to use a registered domain name, which I thought made sense but I wasn't sure. Anyoo I ended up using the registered domain name anyways to install Active Directory and everything seems to have returned to normal. Thanks to the two people who responded.
