CUPS +External Printservers

Does anybody have any experience positive or negetive using external print servers from RH 8.0 and c.u.p.s

We are moving our thermal and line printers from a serial connection to a tcp/ip and I was thinking I prob. can save a heck alot of money if I am able to go with a standard external print server opposed to having to use one made by the printer companys
