I have the following

Period Name Department Account Salary
jan Doe 100 1200 $1000
feb jane 100 1200 $ 500
Mar John 110 1200 $1000
jan paul 100 1300 $3000

I'd like to get the following output

Period Department Account Salary
jan 100 1200 $1000
feb 100 1200 $1500(cumul. of salary by dept. as of feb)
jan 100 1300 $3000
Mar 110 1200 $1000

Ok create a report based on your table.

heres how to make a fast report.
click the reports TAB then click New
Click "AutoReport: Tabular"
Click in the bottom box and find your table
click OK

It will make a report in seconds
Go into design view (click "View" menu then "Design View")
Click the "View" menu again then click "Sorting and Grouping"
In the Field/Expression column pick "Dept"

Then in the "Group Header" (below) change the NO to a YES"
It will put a new header in your report.
Single Click on the "Dept" box in the Detail section and Press Ctrl-C to copy it.
Next click in the white space under that new header and press Ctrl-V to paste a new box in that header

This will group the Depts

then you can put a Total in the footer
=Sum([Account Salary])
