Cultural question aubout lvols names of /opt and /var

There is a question turning around in my mind.

Does any one knoes why Aix dev team named the lvol for /opt:/dev/hd10 and for /var: /dev/hd9var and not simply /hd10 & hd9 ??

I think that it's history reason and all the new lv, they start with name that you can recognized which one is it and don’t remember that hd4 is / and so,
