Ctrl+clicking bezier curves (not anchors)

Alright, CTRL+Click on bezier curves in between anchors was working fine...
Now all of a sudden when I ctrl click the line it doesn't do anything except bring up the bounding box to scale the shape. How do I stop it from doing this?

...use the black arrow tool for control + click to switch to the white arrow tool on the fly...

...using the white arrow tool with control + click reverts you back to the black arrow tool...
