for some reason about 2 weeks ago, when I had occasion to do ctrl-alt-del to bring up the close program dialog box, it didn't - It just rebooted

It never brings up the close program dialog box since.

It does one of three things.

1. Just reboots
2. locks system up - only way out is the power switch
3. does access to floppy - then reboots

Uninstalled Norton system works w/crashguard - it made no difference.

Need help badly.
Thank you....

how many time do you press CTRL+ALT+DEL ?

any more than once will reboot or lockup
Peter Heaton
heaton@characterlink.net
<a href= it how ever you want
I do ctrl-alt-del just once.

I am aware of the 2nd ctrl-alt-del reboot.

thanks!

Speeduke, judging from all the posts from users who can't restart their computers, I'd say you are very fortunate! :)

Seriously, I've seen this. The problem was a sticky CTRL key. Have you had any problems in applications after doing, say, a CTRL+S to save a file or a CTRL+C to copy text?

<a href= plain black box
My problem is solved.

Looked in the system.ini file under the [386Enh] section for the line:
LocalReboot=Off (or maybe False) and change it to: LocalReboot=On. If the
line is not there, add it and save the file.

Found fix in microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion subject was ctrl+alt+del

My system.ini file had LocalReboot=Off
when I changed it, it worked again - perfectly.

Just in case your not familiar with system.ini - it can be edited with C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSEDIT.EXE

find the line, change it and then save the file
then reboot to have the change take effect.
after reboot it should work correctly if your problem is the same as mine.

Thanks to everyone that tried helping!!!!

JimM

You can also edit system.ini and a number of important win98 files by using the msconfig program. To access it goto the start menu, goto the run dialog and type msconfig.

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

Speeduke, my question would be how a legacy windows directive appeared in your INI about two weeks ago. Are you sharing your computer with a user who likes to try Windows 2 & 3 tips & tricks?

If so, watch out. Although the INI system must remain to maintain Win '95 & '98 compatibility with older programs, much damage can be done here.

<a href= plain black box
