Ok. I have a Motorola Vanguard device. I see the smart jack with the cat5 ethernet using pairs 1,2 7,8 as the connection crimped to the RJ 45. I know the vanguard goes 20 feet away with the other end (cat 5) plugged into the DSU input port at the top. I noticed that the tech before me had his RJ crimped blu and Wht-blue (pairs 1,2) and used the oranges for 7,8 (oj and wht oj).

so I repeated his config on the other end. I think this should work. my question shouldn't you use tip first (wht-blue ) and then ring when crimping this 56k connection? And are most if not all 56k connections using the 1,2,7,8 pins?

Pins 1,2,7,8 are correct for this type of data. Using the tip first is the telco standard but as long as both ends are the same it wouldn't matter.
