CSS working with classes 1

i want to use a <p class=&quot;heading&quot;> tag to set properties for every heading on my page. how in the css should i refer to it and set values? is it possible to change elements such as the background color?

Hope this will help.
They miss out the odd piece but right at the end of the tutorial they give a link to some CSS site and there is full detail and explanation there.
