If you look at you will see that all the bold text is anti-aliased. How do I avoid this?

It's currently being controlled by an external style sheet. Does firefox/IE always apply a slight anti aliasing on bold text?

The browser (and it's host operating system) is antialiasing your text. As a developer building a website you have no control over this at all.

Try viewing your site in Safari for the Mac... you may be surprised.

Jeff

What is Javascript? FAQ216-6094

Yup - Windows XP, by default, anti-aliases all text (or possibly all text above a certain font size). You can turn this off, but not via your page - you have to be at the PC to do it.

Windows 2000 did not anti-alias text, so if you look at it on an older PC, you should be able to spot the difference.

Apple computers, as Jeff hints at, have done this for years.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Jeff,

Why? Is my site messed up on a mac?

No... I was suggesting (as Dan mentions) that such anti-aliasing has been common on the Mac for ages... shipped by default, all the browsers on a Mac will show fonts (over a certain size) anti-aliased.

So... I've just visited the site in Safari on a Mac... and it looks really good!

I found the keyword search "Search" button had wrapped and was sitting flush to the left below the rest of the search box. Still totally functional.

The same page showed some roll-over weirdness on the breadcrumb trail... when I rolled over it, it went to one line... when I rolled off it split over two (probably a   could fix that).

It was whilst I was on that particular page I noticed a broken link in your main navigation... starting from this page when I try to visit the Technology link in the navigation, I am directed to this page which gives a 404 error.

I'll leave the images up for a while - if you code a solution and want me to screen grab the result on a Mac, then let me know [smile]

Cheers,
Jeff

while you're on the subject of cross-browser testing, is there any way to test for Safari & IE for Mac without having a Mac? Are there browser emulators out there? (I'm guessing the answer is no....)

"Together we can make 'computer illiterate' a dirty word."

There are. This is probably the most well-known:

Others seem to be around, and were found quite quickly with a search on Google for "Safari screenshot":

There is even a site that does a whole load of browsers, but it's a pay site, and I can't remember the URL anyway.

Hope this helps,
Dan
