.cshrc and local.cshrc definitions needed 1

I'm learning to use the C shell and ran across the local.cshrc on Solaris 8. I had to create the .cshrc file, however. What is the use of the local.cshrc file? When I tried to use the history command, it was no use until I created a .cshrc file and manually put set history=20. Note: the set history=20 line is in local.cshrc file.
