We have a client who is using Commerce Server 2007 for ecommerce catalog and inventory. The client has multiple distribution centers, and each customer is assigned to one or two distribution centers. The bottom line is that the in-stock availability for any product depends on the inventory of the distribution centers to which the customer is assigned.
I have not seen how it is possible for Commerce Server 2007 to support such an inventory configuration. Does anyone have experience with implementing something like this with Commerce Server 2007?
We have discussed possibly having a virtual catalog for each distribution center and then getting inventory from the correct distribution catalog, but then we would be writing custom code to check the primary and secondary distribution centers for inventory info. We also have considered managing inventory outside of Commerce Server altogether.
Is there some other way that such an inventory model can be implemented with Commerce Server? Something we are missing?
Another bit of info that I should add is that we are not using any of the basket or total pipelines for orders, since this is for a B2B site, the customers know their own pricing model and it is better to have our client's back end system handle discounts and pricing. So, the design simply needs to inform the user of a product's inventory status.
