Hi all. I am a new programmer using VB5 and the Crystal Reports 4.6 that came with it. I wrote a program and have sold over 1200 copies to Windows 95/98/ME users. For some reason the crystl32.ocx (4.6.3714) would never register on NT/2000. I didn't know how to fix this so I just put it off and didn't sell to those users. Now it won't work with Windows XP. The error message on XP is "crystl32.ocx is not a valid windows image". That is a problem that I can't put off, if I want to sell any more of my software anyway! :)

I wrote to Crystal and they will not guarantee that version 8.5 will work with WinXP. I can't spend $619 and not know if it is going to work. I definitely want it to make my software work with 98/ME, NT/2000 and XP with whatever fix I do.

Is there an easier fix to this problem that I just don’t know about?
Should I upgrade to VB6 - is a newer Crystal included with that?
Should I buy a copy of Crystal 8 off eBay for $50?
Can anyone tell me from experience what version of Crystal does work on all of those versions of Windows?

I'm not doing anything complicated, just very simple database reports.

ANY help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance and have a great day!

All versions of VB will still come with V4.6 of CR. VB can't give away the current version of CR.

However, you qualify for a Version Upgrade since you have the old version from VB. If you buy the 8.5 Developer Edition Upgrade it is about $225 from CDW.

If you post your question in the CR Integration forum you might find someone who has the same problem. Ken Hamady, On-site/Phone Crystal Reports Training/Consulting
