Crystal Reports under Metaframe

On a couple of separate occasions I have been asked to help with application compatibility issues between Metaframe XP and some applications that utilise various crystal reports. On all occasions the timeframe has been very short so the fix has been a quick and dirty one - to copy the contents of c:\windows\crystal (DLL files) into the Windows system folder. This resolved all the issues immediately.

regmon and filemon did not show any significant failed operations which surprised me. I have googled a fair bit and come across some other documented cases similar to mine, and their fix too was to simply copy the DLLs into the system folder.

I am keen to find a good answer / better solution for this as I will probably come across it again in the future.

Up to v8.5, that's the only real solution I've seen - there have been quite a few questions on this topic both here and on thethin.net.

8.5 seems to install quite nicely, providing you manually switch to change user /install mode first - and, if you require Enterprise Services, install the ES Orange CD before the CR Green CD.

Hope this helps

I have yet to find a better solution than the one you mention above. I have found other solutions, such as placing the DLLs in the Default User profile, but this is a space hog.

Just thought of something - you could always add c:\windows\crystal to the system path environment.

I haven't tried this - you may have to do further tweaking to ensure that users get this variable also - but should work, and is quite simple to undo if not.

Hope this helps

Thanks guys... I did actually try prepending the crystal folder into the system path and had no luck. I didn't troubleshoot that avenue for long though, I assumed there was a path somewhere hard-coded, which when I think about it now, doesn't seem likely.
