I keep getting an error stating that the connection failed for either ODBC or Native, though SQL Plus connects to the database flawlessly.

Anyone else experience this with Oracle?

Might be a client setup issue, can't check that right now so I thought I'd query the field of experts.

Thanks,

Hi synapse,
The exact Oracle error message ( and its ORA- or TNS- identification number) is essential to really see what's going wrong. If the error you are getting is just the 'typical' Crystal one about the database info not being correct, it may be hard to determine what Oracle thinks is wrong with it.

Try using the ODBC configuration tool to test the connection and see if that returns an Oracle error.

Usually, if SqlPlus on the CE server can connect, then the reports that use Oracle should also be able to do so..

The odd thing is, the error changes... Currently it's Failed to open the connection, with no numbers referenced.

Just looking for an overview of known issues, if it's related to connectivity I'll figure it out.

Thanks,

Discovered that the admin had installed the Oracle 10G client, uninstalled and went to 9 and everything is as it should be.

Hi,
Odd..Oracle clients are supposed to be backwards compatible with previous database versions ( from 8.0 and higher)..I suspect BObj's usage ( at least for native connectivity) is too specific to a particular set of DLLs and is, therefore, less flexible than it should be..

The ODBC issue can be caused by using mismatching drivers between the client and the database.( Another reason I try to avoid all but the Wire-protocol, direct connect ones - and those only when absolutely needed)

Glad you got it working...

Yeah, well, my history with Oracle demonstrates that they say so, but it almost NEVER works as they say, there are numerous exceptions.

At the last contract they had CR 9, and I had a Oracle 10 XE install on my desktop and it worked fine, coincidentally the CR 10 G client works fine for dev, just didn't work for me for Crystal Reports Server XI.
