Hello everyone,

I've been trying to write a Crystal Report based on the ARN and ARO tables and I'm having problems. If I just put a few fields in the details line it runs fine. If I try to add just one group it locks up and never runs. I need to add a few different groups and add criteria to several fields and it'll be impossible if I can't even get a report with three fields and one group to run. <gasp!>

Does anyone know any tricks to make a report like this run? I don't know if it matters but the ARN file is about 918MB in size and the ARO is 866MB.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Are you using the Providex or SQL version of Mas90/Mas200?

When you say 'it locks up' how did you come to that conclusion? And how long did you wait?

What type of grouping are you performing? What fields if any are you summarizing?

Thanks for the reply dgillz! I'm running the Providex version (can't get them to pony up for the SQL version).

It locks up when I click Preview. It'll switch to the preview screen but remain blank and the lower left corner says Accessing Database or something like that. I can't even hit the stop button. I've started the report and waited about 2hrs before canceling it.

I'm not summarizing any fields yet and the only group is SOUserID. For each user I'm pulling the invoice number and invoice date from ARN and from ARO I'm pulling the item number, item description and extended charge amount. The two tables are linked by invoice number.

Ultimately, I would like the report to be grouped by UserID (only picking two out of about 30) then by the product line's G/L number (they call this a "Product Class" and each product class has several Product Lines under it).

I hope this gives you a little better picture of what I'm trying to do. I've tried pulling it all into Access but that's not much better.

Try linking from ARO TO ARN by invoice number AND header sequence number.

The issue is that you are grouping on non-key fields and since ARN and ARO are normally pretty large you get locked up pretty bad. What you should do is make a formula out of the field and group on the formula. That should speed you up.

Well, I'm certainly ready to try that. I'm pretty much a novice at it so could you give me an example of making a formula out of the field?

Thanks, everybody, for all your help!

One other option that works well for me with other tables that are complicated: Spool the report with all the data, Select Save data with Report (from File menu), then add group, and create it then. It works like a snap! Also, if you are doing ANY sorting, perform the sorting after you have previewed, not before. I have many reports that would take days, if I didn't use these tips.

All the best to you!
