Does anyone know how to set up a Crystal Report so that the
user can select input values from a list based on a query rather than simply typing free-text values? For example, several of our reports ask the user to specify the facility. I'd like to present the user with a pick list based on a query against the facility table.

Thread149-39169 might help, or there is a white paper on this on the Business Objects website. However, these are still not dynamic pick lists, and must be updated periodically. For a dynamic pick list, you would need to use a third party tool.

In CR8.5 and later, and maybe earlier, you can assign default values to a parameter using data from a database table/field..

It becomes static after creation, so if the lookup data changes frequently, you need to update the values periodically by repeating the data retrieval process used to create the list in the first place.

There are two 3rd-party tools (that I'm aware of) that provide Crystal with Dynamic parameter functionality.

One is ChelseaTech CViewPick:

The other is my DataLink Viewer:

If you're looking for a true dynamic parameter pick list, you could look at our SPL 2 (Smart Pick Lists). It does not require that you modify your existing Crystal Reports to have dynamic / dynamic cascading values for your parameters that integrates with ePortfolio out-of-the-box or your custom frontend.

Or if you're looking for a faster and easier way to maintain your pick lists, you may wish to look at our newly release .rpt Inspector 2 Professional Suite. In addition to over 100 new features, it now has support for working with default values across multiple parameters and across one or more reports. Or you could use our new "copy from source to multiple destinations" feature for default values.
Both products and two editions of .rpt Inspector 2 Professional Suite are now available for a FREE 30-day trial download.
