Hey everyone. I just upgraded from CR8 Developer Edition to CR8.5 Developer Edition. The upgrade went smoothly on my system, and CR8.5 seems to work out a few of the bugs i hated so much with CR8.

The problem is that when I put the CD in another machine and upgrade that system. The installation appears to go fine, until you try to open the program...It tells me "Thasnk you for using this evaluation version of Crystal Reports. Your evaluation period has expired."

I would understand this if it was really an evaluation version...but its not. This is the full upgrade.

Is this a known issue? Or does my co-worker just have a lame computer?

Also, I noticed just now that in the upgrade/install the setup asks for a certain file from the CR8 disk. I think CR8 might have not installed properly, but I don't know.

Also, is there any good way to get crystal off a computer? The uninstall leaves all sorts of residual dll's and other junk in the registry.

This could be a bug, but it probably isn't the upgrade, but the original Crystal that you are upgrading that was the eval version. Are you sure that the CR you are upgrading was a regular install? If you reinstall 8 can you do the upgrade successfully?

There was a recent thread about feedback on 8.5 changes. We would like to hear your comments. Ken Hamady

I have a similar problem to jazerr's.
I installed the Seagate Info 50 seat freebie that Seagate distributes, on a PC running Win95. By mistake, I chose the 'Client' option instead 'Stand-alone' in the Installation Type screen. It will not re-install as 'Stand-alone'. Every time I try, it defaults to 'Client' option, bypassing the Installation Type screen altogether. I have uninstalled it using Seagate Info uninstall; using Win95 'Add/Delete Program'. then, in each case, I went through the Windows Registry deleting any keys for Seagate and Crystal. It still defaults to the 'Client' option.
I guess the next step would be to reformat the HD, re-install Win95 and then try re-installing Seagate Info correctly. Obviously I would like to avoid this option.

Another thing I just found...

It appears 8.5 is not fully compatible with the version 8 Runtime components. It appears to be hard storing the database info somewhere other than the Set Location option. Obviously, this is no good when I have to make the report in 8.5 on my local, then load it up to a server that may have a different database name...

Oh well...I guess its back to version 8 for me...

My suggestion (Since I am in charge of the upgrades of CR where I work - about 7 machines) is to completely [red]uninstall[/red] all former versions before attempting a new install. If you try to install over another version, it will mess up your Windows registry. I have found this true with the "full" and "upgrade" versions. We are using the developer edition.

As for uninstalling, Just uninstall using add/remove programs in the control panel. When that is finished, delete the Seagate directory completely. That should work. Works for me!

While I'm here, we got Crystal Enterprise. What exactly is it, what does it do, and how does it pertain to CR v8.5?

Thanks!

m99computers - it may work for you but certainly has not worked for me. If you read my post, I have done evrything you suggest and then more. I still cannot install the dopey thing in 'stand alone' mode.

Strange. Have you tried contacting Crystal Decisions about this? It does work as a stand alone install. I have done it. What version are you using? Maybe it is only the Developer Edition that works like that. I'm sorry I cannot help you more.

hi there.

There is a bug with version 8 and now also seems to be with 8.5 also, where if you install crystal reports and make a mistake while keying in the cd key, it will not tell you that it is the wrong key it will just install and think it is an evaluation copy.

When you completely uninstall crystal reports, you need to make sure that you take out what is in the registry, along with the crystal folder in the windows or WinNT folder. If you are not comfortable with going into your registry, which is risky if you are not completely familiar with it, then you could call Crystal Decisions, and explain to them what has happened, they have a fix that should be able to help in this situation.

hope this helps. E. McEvoy

Brett - I am using Seagate Info 7 that I received from Seagate when I registered as CR user.

The only thing that I have not tried is talking to Crystal Decisions. That will be my next step.
