there are some major differences between brio and CE. First of all, CE doesn't require any component to be installed or downloaded to the client for it's full functionality. All DHTML delivery. this includes reporting, ad hoc query and olap analysis. Greaty for external deployments of the technology too - CE works very well with multiple firewalls (DMZ setups) Very secure.
Scalability is another major difference. Brio can't scale out or up depending on your needs - CE was built to d o this.
Another big differentiatior is the base of crystal people vs. brio. go look at monster.com and search on brio vs. crystal for resume's. at the company i used to work for it was significantly easier to hire people with crystal expertise.
