I'm trying to send a Crystal report to Adobe Acrobat, to create a PDF file. I have tried the export function using all of the format types Crystal supports(Word,Text,Excel,HTML,Rich Text etc). In each case, something gets lost in the translation. Usually, it's the graphics. Using Crystal 7, is there a way to write a report to disk, exactly as it would look on paper? Thanks.

Unfortunately exporting is not an exact art. Crystal admits up front that exporting will cause formatting problems in most cases. Here are a few tips to help:

1) Snap everything to a line. Horizontal and vertical.

2) Simplify your report design. A lot of graphics, lines, boxes and even columns can cause a format nightmare when trying to export and save the look. Try to keep it simple.

3) Know that you are going to lose any drilldown cpabilities, on-demand subreports and in some cases graphs that you use in your report.

4) Play with all of the exporting options. Sometimes you may need to export to Excel and then on from there - now this option is by far the worst choice for routine exports, but it will get you by for a single export attempt.

5) When you can, have two versions of the report if the format needs major tweaking. Sometimes I have to make the original Crystal report look awful to get a good export result. If I do have to do this I usually create a second report and label it accordingly. Like: "ReportForExcel.rpt"

Out of all of the formats to choose from, in my opinion HTML is the worst. very little control over the final format. Major adjustments needed for a decent look.

The following is a cut and paste from Seagate's knowledge Base concerning .pdf's:

Exporting to PDF format is not available when you install version 8 Crystal Reports.

However, you can download a ZIP file containing an unsupported test, or beta, version of the PDF exporting DLL (U2fpdf.dll) from our support website:

Go to <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> and search for 'SCR8-PDFExportDriver.zip'.

Exporting to PDF is only possible in version 8 of Crystal Reports - it will fail in any other version. For further information about the PDF exporting DLL, please refer to the Readme.txt file that is included in ZIP file.

NOTE:======

This exporting DLL is a beta version and therefore not supported by Seagate Software Technical Support. Please do not call Technical Support with questions about using this export format.

Hope this helps!
Cody ford
codyjford@hotmail.com

VB, VBS, Seagate Info/Crystal Reports
