Hello, when I run a report in ePortfolio using Crystal Enterprise, do the reports run locally as a temp file or are they printing from the server? Thank you for any help.

Hi,
Printing is always Local( this is, it uses printers defined on the Client's PC) - Unless it is a scheduled report ( even then, since the server is acting like a client, it is Local to the Server)..

I don't know if it's specific for a networked printer or not but one thing you might experience that caused us some issues until we figured it out was that reports configured for a specific printer (such as a label printer w/custom label sizes) wouldn't print correctly on the local PC where the printer was installed (scheduled or not). Even when selecting "no printer" in the report set-up (and changing all of the defaults in the Crystal Management Console), none of the local settings worked until we installed the drivers and configured the defaults on the CE server. Once we did that, the problem was solved and the reports would print correctly. I'm sure Turkbear is right, but for this one issue, the server settings seemed to take priority.

Hi,
The server settings for the printers ( which are installed, etc.) are important, but not for printing with an on-demand report ( different for scheduled ones). They are used for formatting the report for viewing/printing..CE uses the capabilities of the Server's printer(s) to determine how it can display/print a report, even if that printer is NOT the one actually doing the printing..

Thanks. That's the part I didn't quite understand w/our situation. Our label reports are "on demand"; not scheduled. Even though the CE viewer was showing as an 8x11.5 layout; selecting to print it locally using the label printer and 4X2 label size (before we networked the printer), it still printed as 8x11.5 (spit out about 10 blank labels) until we loaded the drivers on the server; networked the printer and configured so that the viewer displayed properly (also using activeX controls instead of the default DHTML viewer which was Crystal's only suggestion for resolving). Maybe I missed something but that's the reason for the post. I definitely wasn't trying to conflict with your response which I still feel is correct - just our situation was different.

Hi,
No need to worry..I understood what you were getting at...
