Hey all,
I am trying to connect to an oracle 9i database using an ODBC driver called DataDirect (using Crystal Developer 10). When I open the .rpt version of the report, I get the message "the database dll 'crdb_oracle.dll' could not be loaded". The report will work if I go into 'Set Datasource Location" and select my oracle database and click UPDATE. This is a real pain to do, as it takes over 1 minute for it to finally update. This has happened on all the machines I tried to install Crystal 10 on.

I should also mention that this machine does not have the oracle client installed on it.

Any help that anyone can give would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
Ben Morton

Hello there,
Most cases this error message appears because Crystal can't find the Oracle file Oci.dll, which is
needed for Crystal to connect to Oracle database.

Try:

1. Search your computer for Oci.dll.

• If no copies found, install the Oracle client.

• If one copy found, reinstall the Oracle
client and

• If two copies found, modify the value of the
PATH system variable so that "'C:\Oracle\Bin;..."
precedes "C:\OraForms\Bin;...".

If two copies are found, it usually means that both Oracle Forms and Oracle Client are installed and if the Client is installed after the Forms the path is not recorded correctly. So this is why the path adjustment is neccessary.

Hope this helps!
B~

I really was trying to avoid installing the oracle client on this machine, as I will need to have Crystal on many machines. Is this possible? I thought I have seen it.

Thanks for the response, any other ideas?

Ben

You have to have the ORACLE client installed for the ODBC connection to ORACLE work.

I thought so...
Thanks MJRBIM

Hi,
Actually Crystal's latest ODBC drivers have thin-client ( wire-protocol) versions that do not need Oracle client software to work..They work like a Java connection string ( host:port:sid)

Not sure whether they can be installed separately or just with CRXI..

You can also buy this type of ODBC from Data Direct:
