Hello,

I don't know much about Progress, except that its the db behind the application we use. We want to connect Crystal to generate reports. I've got the merant odbc driver, the right ports/service names, etc, but I get an error when I try to connect: Exceeding permissable number of connections. No idea what that means as there are more than a dozen users connecting via the application. Can't find any help so I'm turning here. Any info greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Jeff

There are 2 possible problems here. The easy win is that -n is set too low - but I'm sure you will have checked this. The other has to do with the spawned servers. The -Mi, Mn and Ma flags determines how many servers can be spawned. An ODBC connection cannot share a server with a 4GL connection. Also, even though all users may have logged off, the server that had the 4GL connection cannot be reassigned to an ODBC connection. The solution is to set up a separate broker to handle the ODBC connections only or, alternatively, set up your -Mi, Mn and Ma flags such that once all your 4GL users have logged in you'll still have servers available to take your ODBC connections.

Hello,

I read your post and was hoping that you might be able to help me. I am a new user to Crystal Reports XI and am trying to connect to a Progress database (ver 91, I think), but do not know where to begin. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Hi. Crystal connects to Progress via the ODBC driver. What you need to do is start your Progress db and then configure the driver from within the Windows Control Panel and test the connection. If that works then you are almost there. However, you need to either ensure that your db has been created with no user names and passwords or, alternatively, you will need o provide the necessary name and password. If you can connect from the Windows Control Panel but not from Crystal, you need to check that the Progress db server is configured corrctly. What Progress does is it spawns 'sub'servers' whenever a connection to the db is made, the number of these sub-servers dependent on how you configure (the -Mi -Mn and -Ma parameters). When a 4GL client connects it sets up a session within that sub-server. However, a 4GL client and an SQL client cannot share a sub-server. Also, when the 4GL client exits, it does not release the sub-server for SQL client connection. Therefore, even though you may have no-one connected to the db, if all the sub-servers have had 4GL connections at some point in time, an SQL client will be unable to connect.

HI. I need some help. I need to know what is the best practice to create a connection with Crystal Reports XI and Progress. What kind of ODBC is necesary for this version of (CR XI) and what are the steps to create a good conection.

The Operative System is Solaris.
