Hi guys!

I unsuccessfully tried to Network my Laptop and my PC together using a:
Crosswire Patch Cable: CAT 5e Patch Cord

Here’s the exact one I have:

I went through all the steps that were required on WinXPs Network Wizard…I had my Crosswire Ethernet Cable running from and to both computers. After going through the procedure of the ‘Network Wizard’ on both computers I was given information saying that a Network was Successfully Setup (received on both computers).

My problem is I cannot see the other computer when I go to ‘My Network Places’.
Is the Crosswire Cable supposed to be inserted in the Ethernet slots? Because that what I did
When I’m on my Laptop I can’t see my PC and vice-versa.

Have I missed a step?

Any help would be great.

P.S. If I missed stating some info…let me know!

Is that cable the same as a crossover cable? Because you need a crossover cable to connect two PC's, not a straight through cable.

You don't have a DHCP server available either, so you have to set up each machines IP addesses manually. Set one machine to 192.168.0.1 and the other to 192.168.0.2, both with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Can you open a command window and ping the other machine?

Hi guys!

Thanks for the help [smile]

I think it is?

The caption on the website says the following:
Used to connect workstation to workstation or hub to hub

Here’s the cable I have:

…you have to set up each machines IP addesses manually.
I followed your directions and ‘tried’ to do what you said. Don’t know if I did it right, however. I went in to ‘My Network Connections’ and modified the TCP/IP settings, but there were several options, I didn’t edit them all – eeek!

I did this for both computers and could not ping the other machine.

Can I find my the IP address on my machines by entering: ipconfig in dos?

What can I do from here?

Thanks again for the help.

Typing IPconfig at a DOS prompt should among other things show you something similar to this -

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

The IP address is what is set via the Local Area Connection Properties/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)/ Properties/ Use the following IP address.

After setting your IP click on the Advanced tab at the bottom of the page and select the Wins tab and select the box for Enable Net Bios over TCP/IP. Close all the property pages via Apply and OK. You shouldn't have to worry about any of the other Advanced tab settings.

Are both machines members of the same workgroup? That's compulsory!

Can you ping 127.0.0.1 ?

If you can't then the problem is your NIC cards or TCP/IP stack. If you can, and still can't ping the other machine then it has to be the cable, doesn't it?

If its still not working can you type ipconfig/all into a DOS box and cut and paste the results here? It may help us see whats wrong.

Here's mine (for what it's worth!).

C:\Documents and Settings\Steve>ipconfig/all
