Crossover Connection works intermittantly

I have a network problem, can anyone help?

1 PC is a Pentium 3 with Win ME.
The other is a Pentium 2 with Win 98.

I use a cable internet connection which automatically assigns IP addresses. When I want to transfer files between PCs I unplug the cable modem and connect the Crossover cable instead.

This sometimes just works perfectly and I get a really fast connection, but mostly I get this situation where the network goes really slowly and stops working when I try to copy a file. This always causes the Pentium 2 to crash.

What do I need to do so I can use both the cable modem and the network & they will work reliably?

Had you considered a router? No more cable disconnection, and you can have the modem on either machine without swapping cables.
It also gives NAT and a firewall. Ed Fair
