crossover cable from laptop to 6c4

I am trying to hook up my laptop to a 6c4 using a network crossover cable. I set a static ip on both systems but can not ping eachother. I used my multimeter to check signals on my cable and all seems ok. I got the pinouts from an IBM doc. What am I missing? Is this actually somthing I can do?

I may try rebuilding the cable but I am thinking there is something I am not setting up.

pinouts I am using

1 to 3
2 to 6
3 to 1
4 to 4
5 to 5
6 to 2
7 to 7
8 to 8

Your pinouts are correct for a cross over cable.
I would get the cable tested (not just with a multi-meter but an actual cable tester) to see if maybe you have a bad/flaky crimp. If the cable otherwise checks out, do an "ifconfig -a" on the system and verify that the port you are plugging in to is truly defined and operational. Also check to make sure both boxes have the same subnet mask.

subnetmask the same ?
set the nic speeds manually to 100 Mbit full as well.

yes subnet masks are the same. Rebuilt the corssover cable still not luck. I did not try setting speed to 100 full but will give that a try when I get a chance.

Ok I set speed to 100Mbps Full Duplex. I still have no luck but i am also not getting any link lights when my cable is pluggeed in. I am leaving my remote site today and will play around with things in my main office monday. I don't have anymore rj45 taps so I can't make up another cable today so I am @@@@ out of luck on getting this going
this morning.
