I'm having a problem of cross-talking. I've contacted SBC and of course they do not show a problem. Is this a symptom of a card going bad? I've asked the supervisor to get the extensions of the people complaining as I want to see if they are all on the same card. Can a defective card/bad card cause a cross talking problem?

Cross-talk is usually a wiring problem, though it could be an electronic failure. Can you be more descriptive of the problem? Can you tell if the problem is cross-talk between two telephone lines (between the Merlin and the phone company), or between two stations (between the Merlin and the telephone instruments.)

Did the problem start concurrent with any wiring changes? Cross-talk often happens due to an error in punch-down of wire. If it's between two CO lines and you didn't change anything on site, then SBC might have made a field wiring change, perhaps on the street, that could cause the problem. Though they are trained not to do this.

If you have standard loop-start phone lines, you can easily isolate the problem by disconnecting the Merlin and using two telephones plugged directly into the lines.

I've seen crosstalk caused by elevated loop current.

Wiring mistakes, or poor wiring connections in house, between LEC cables or back in the Central Office are most common.

I agree with the connecting 2 single line telephones at the demarc to see if the crosstalk can be heard.
