Cross Tabs in sub reports

I have a container report with 5 sub reports. Each sub report is a cross tab. The container passes the parameter to the sub reports, in this case it is a begin date and end date.

When running a report, the cross tabs are limited to roughly 20 days (the width of the container) even if I choose an entire year. You would have to drill into each sub report and then the cross tab will display in full with all the dates chosen.

Is there any way around this? So the cross tabs will fully expand within the container?

Subreports take on the width of the container report. You would have to add a crosstab to the main report that forces the width of the main report to expand. You could remove the grid and format the content not to show. Then you could stretch the width of the subs to accommodate all the columns.

The dates are dynamic so the user can choose between 1 day and a year, will the subs still stretch that far?

You would have to create a crosstab in the container report that would force that width. Not sure what you are working with. If the container has the date field, you could then use that in the crosstab as a column to force the necessary width. However, you must initially create the container crosstab to be the maximum possible width--and stretch the subs accordingly. Then in subsequent runs, the subs will expand or contract appropriately, but if your first set up has the sub too narrow, it will only stretch to that point regardless of the parameters.

Cathy Michtish developed an interesting technique called a wrapping crosstab. She has demoed this at several conferences over the years.

You might want to consider taking that really wide crosstab and wrapping it into groups with all the same page width.

There is a sample report on our web site and an example in our newsletter.
