Hi guys!

I want to connect to computers using a cross over cable connection.
The scenario goes like this...

1. I made a X-over cable, one end of the cable has a Orange/White, Orange, Green/White, Blue, Blue/White, Green, Brown/White, Brown assignments. The other end is White/Green, Green, White/Orange, Blue, White/Blue, Orange, White/Brown, Brown.

2. I set the IP Address and SubNet Mask of 2 machines.
Machine #1
IP Address: 10.1.1.1
SubNet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Machine #2
IP Address: 10.1.1.2
SubNet Mask: 255.255.555.0
3. I set the workgroup name of 2 machines.

But i still cannot find the computers in the network neighborhood. I also cant ping the computers neither.

Please help......

check the lights on the NICs when you plug your cable in.

If both lights do not come on, you've got a bad cable or a bad NIC. (the cable schematic and IP settings look fine)

Check that any firewall is turned off!

try pinging the loopback (ping 127.0.0.1) and pinging the computer's own IP address.

If it can't ping itself, it's either a problem with the TCP/IP stack, or the NIC drivers. Reinstalling these should get you going.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[pc][ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

Thanks! but I can ping my IP Address. Any other suggestions? Please....

Install Netbuei on both machines, under network properties.

This should allow you to see each other in network neighbourhood.

. Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing is installed, both machines
. Share something, anything, on both machines
. Make sure that 'Netbios over TCP/IP' is enabled on both machines
. Recheck the Workgroup names to ensure they are identical

Though quite frankly if you cannot ping the other machine there is something wrong with the cable.

Thank you guys! I really appreciate your suggestions. I'll try it... I hope it will work this time. Coz this one consumes a lot of my time.

One more question, if there is something wrong with my cable, why does the icon "connected" shows on my windows toolbar. I have also checked the workgroup and they are identical.

Best regards!:)
