hi ALL
i am new to networking so i want to ask a very basic question..may be very simple to
you all
When we are connecting the following devices what is the rule of thumb for
cables whether straight or cross to be used
hub<--->hub
switch<------>switch
switch<---------->hub
hub/switch<------->router
Also whether port speed considerations should be kept in minds or auto
negotiated port speed is enough.
Hope that you all will help me (a new guy in comm/networking field)

absi,

[tab]You should always stick with the standard. See the Cabling forum for several threads about how and why, e.g. How do I make connections. The standard what designed to permit the best possible connection over the distance required. In short, never use straight through cabling.

All of the combinations you mentioned use crossover except hub/switch-router. Some hubs have special ports with a built-in crossover, in which case you would use a straight thru cable. Always refer to the documentation for the specific device.

Keep in mind that I am referring to 10BaseT crossover and 10BaseT straight, not simple straight through which, as James said, is a no-no. The normal pinout for 10BaseT is the EIA/TIA 568B specification. Refer to the cabling forum for diagrams and info.
