Cropping out a circle

...the most straight forward method is to make an elliptical clipping mask, this will of course still have all the surrounding artwork not visible still available...
if you want to remove the surrounding area it will depend on the pdf content...
...if the pdf is nothing more than typed text, one solution would be to file > place your pdf page, select it and make the transparency at 99%, then select object > flatten transparency, set raster/transparency slider all the way to the right. Set line art and text resolution to 2400, Gradient and Mesh Resolution to 300 or 400. Enable all text to outlines and strokes to outlines, preserve overprints and spot colors and click ok.
Select the elipse tool and place it on top of flattened artwork, go to the pathfinder palette and select crop (bottom row, third from right hand side).
...if the pdf is any more complex than text then it becomes a bit more problematic, but can be overcome with the following:
...either rasterize the pdf to 600dpi in photoshop and crop it down as required, with a clipping path if required too, then import this to illustrator...
...or...
...place your pdf page as above, got to object > rasterize and set this to 600dpi if you are running for high end output, this will help maintain crisp text and strokes...
...place an ellipse over the area you need, select both elements and got to object > clipping mask > make...
...go to the transparency palette and select multiply, leave at 100%...
...go to object > flatten transparency, choose high resolution and click ok...
...this will crop it down to the clipping mask size, the image is 600 dpi raster image...
