Cropping a multi-layered area within a large ai. document

I have a large multi-layered, complex map of which I need to crop a small area with the layers retained. Any clues/ideas/solutions? Please????

Do you need to do something more intricate then creating a rectangle (or other path) and selecting Object > Crop Area > Make?
