CRM Marketing List Gen Performance

We are using CRM Sales and Marketing 8.4 (PeopleTools 8.4.09), and are experiencing deteriorating performance in generating marketing lists as the List Builder sorts through more records. With only 3500 records to sort for the list, the process has doubled in time from the first run with 500 records to sort. Is anyone else seeing performance issues in this regard? How did you get around them?

We are using a custom data map to pull from the Company component records. The map was assembled by a PeopleSoft consultant.
