CRM 4 + tight integration to telephones

I read that the integration from MS Dynamics CRM 4 to telephones is accomplished by means of using 3rd party interfaces.

Obviously MS CRM is new to our organization and our users want to be able to merely click on something within the CRM and have the contact's number automatically dialed for them - like they are used to in their previous Contact Manager software.

My first question is - is using a 3rd party Component/ActiveX/etc. the only way to accomplish this?

Next - does anyone have experience with this and/or have some recommended 3rd party vendor suggestions?
Note - we are looking for TIGHT, 'transparent' integration - not shelling out to another application.

Any advice/suggestions you might have would be appreciated.
