Creating text-only/basic pdfs from pdf brochures

Hi all,
I work for a University and we produce a variety of brochures with text, colour and images using quarkxpress. They are uploaded onto our website as pdfs. When users print them, they currently have to print the full version with text and images. We would like to produce 'print friendly' versions of these pdfs with images stripped out and only basic formatting. Does anyone know if there is a way we can do this? Any ideas or suggestions welcome. The content is not held in a CMS and is inputted directly into quark.

Repurposing content from a page layout application is a clumsy process to be avoided. A designed page may re-order the text (pullquotes, inline captions/tables, etc) and make extracting a text-only version confusing to the reader.

You need to catch this text before it gets mangled in a page layout. If you don't want to bother with a CMS (an odd choice as many are free and a university would be silly to have no online document management), at least compose all text in something like Microsoft Word. From Word, you can place the text in QuarkXPress and copy that same text from Word to a web page.
