Someone mentioned to me that a Domain Administrator can create a file share on a Windows 2003 server while connected with Remote Desktop to a standard XP workstation.
Are you saying that a DA working from an XP machine, uses RDP to go into a Windows 2003 Server to create a share on that server?? Trying to understand question
Yip. Say i'm connected with RDP to XP workstation and i need to create a share on some 2003 file server for the user. RDP to server not available.
Is there then any way to create this share from a XP workstation? Perhaps some command line utility that i'm not aware of?
Hope i make sense.
I use Dameware Utilities. I believe through its remote command prompt you can use a command line to create a share and set its permission. I believe Hyena could do the same thing. If RDP not available, and I take it you can not physically access the console??, how else do you manage this server?
You either need physical access to the server or remote access to the server (via RDP, Dameware, etc.). Not aware of a command line from a workstation that will allow you admin authority on a server to create a share.
I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.
There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!
Yes, Dameware Utilities has a remote command prompt utility, that once you authenticate, it is like you are on a local command prompt. Have fun remembering the command line syntax for this share you want.
You could also use PSTOOLS (Free utility) to do a remote script with a run as capability. Again, Have fun remembering the command line syntax for this share you want.
Another way is to right-click on the "my computer" icon on the XP machine and then "manage" that machine. Then click "Action" and then "Connect to another computer..." and put in the server name. From there you can go to Shares, and then create a new share. You still need proper credentials though.
