creating repetitive patterns

i have seen some images created in illustror where a design or symbol is reproduced over a large area to create something that looks like a wallpaper design. Does anyone have any idea how to do this?

I suppose I could copy and paste the design loads of times but i'm sure there is a faster way.

In the swatches palette you can work with solid colors, gradients and patterns.
Refer to Illustrator's help file for a quick guide on how to create patterns.
