Creating Patterns

I am trying to create a pattern in Illustrator. Parts of my pattern go over the bounding box so that it will all blend together when it is tiled. But when I drag it to the swatches palette, and then use it to fill an object, the tiles don't blend or overlap where I had parts of the pattern go over the bounding box. Instead, I can see a thick border of space in between each tile. How can I get rid of that space between tiles?
