the problem is that I have tried to create a macro in Excel so that I can make text in a cell bold by pressing "CTR" + "B" - I have set this up in Word sucessfully, but it does not seem to work in Excel, any ideas up in Word.

Sounds "odd" that a normal "built-in" function such as Control-B does NOT work. The one possibility I can think of is that "Control-B" has ALREADY been assigned to another "macro" in your "PERSONAL.xls" file.

To check this possibility out, you need to load Excel, and then "unhide" your PERSONAL.xls file. Once unhidden, check for any macros which are set for "keyboard-activation" with "Control-B".

Hope this helps. Please advise if this works.
