Creating Linked Circles

I'm trying to create three linked 3D circles in Illustrator.

I've been successful just playing with two circles and made them 3d but when I use the pathfinder tool to link them they go flat. If I create outlines and flatten them, I can't get the image to link properly.
Any ideas?
thanks.

This is a guess as I'm not entirely sure of what you are trying to do but what about expanding the objects (Object - Expand Appearance) before using the pathfinder?

I know what I'm trying to do should be super simple, so I'm sitting not beleiving I haven't got it yet!

Hmmm Expand Apperance is grayed out, I tried Expand and then the pathfinder but still no luck. It sort of does what I want.

All I want to do is make three circles that link together that looked like they are linked and not overlapping.
I also want the circles to be beveled. However, when playing with the pathfinder tool, it changes the colour of teh circles to the same colour. All the circles need to be different colours.

Would it be better maybe to make a clipping path and then copy and paste it on top of the same set of circles?

Thank YOU!
