Creating inventory/sales DB, need help setting tax rates.

I have a table setup to track inventory and provide pricing, tax rate, quantity available, etc. The tax rate could change so I don't want to set the tax rate individually for each item. The tax rate column is an integer which will correspond to the correct tax rate for the item I'm selling(if 1 tax rate is 6.5, if 2 tax rate is 0). There will be 6 tax rates I can think of right now, possibly more. Should I create another table to track these, or is there a better way?

Create a table of tax bands and set each item using a letter or number.
