On creating a function in Crystal Reports, but George Peck's book, Crystal Reports V8.5 - The Complete Reference". It has an excellent section covering how to do this as well as lotsof other good info. There are also versions of this book for 7 and 8, but I do not know if the the UFL section is in those books, but it is in the V8.5 book, and the functions you create will work in Crystal 6.

On point 2, your formula is If IsNull({fieldname}) then "--" else {fieldname}

I cannot help you with VB.
