creating drop down boxes

I am a begining flash user. I have been trying to create a dropdown box using the load unload movie action. I am able to load the movie (which contains the buttons for the drop down box) onto the stage but it places it in the upper left hand corner. I have read that if you load the movie into a movie clip you can control the placement by selecting the target option and then entering the name of the movie clip when I do this the movie does not load at all am I missing something any help is greatly appreciated
