Creating Column when column count hits 40??

Can anyone help, I want to create a multi column report based on one field, I dont want it expanding more that a page. e.g. As you see below when recond count hits say 40 then it wraps to next column... can it be done??

joe james jill
bob sally
fred Ned

Have you tried using multiple column formatting? Go to the section expert->details->format with multiple columns->layout tab->set the width and gap between details->check "down then across".
